Notes: For day four of dramionedrabble's 12 Days of Halloween. Prompt: eerie.
Summary: Ignoring Draco Malfoy is not an easy feat.
Hermione adjusted the lens of her telescope, twirling the ridged band till it clicked into focus, the amorphous, fuzzed edges of various celestial luminaries fazing into clarity. She ignored the obnoxious entity beside her as he prattled on about purity and superiority and the like, choosing instead to examine the full, bright crest of the moon, her eyes dipping into craters, transitioning between the striking light of the full sphere and the eerie black of the space beyond.
“You’re not listening to me Granger.”
“Useful observation number one, Malfoy.”
She heard the smirk in his voice as he next spoke but refused to turn, her left eye pressed resolutely to the smooth eyepiece.
“You’re listening now.”
She didn’t speak – no point in provoking him – but the moon now seemed further away than it could have been even without the aide of a telescope. He went on.
“I’m not a fan of make-up astronomy lessons either, but I doubt we need to spend them scrutinizing – of all things – the moon. I mean, don’t you think we’ve seen enough of that particular rock?”
Hermione let it go with a sigh, turning to face him. There was little point in milking her indifferent charade any further. “What are you trying to say Malfoy?”
“Oh, I dunno,” his sparkling eyes infuriated her. She crossed her arms over her chest and stood her ground. Why Malfoy, of all the people to get stuck with? He leaned sideways into the battlement, propping an elbow with ease as he swept the sky with lazy eyes.
“Mars is bright tonight.”
