Tap.

Squeak.

Tap.

Squeak.

Tap.

Squeak.

House sat at the head of the conference room table, spinning side-to-side in his roll chair and tapping his cane on the table, all the while staring at Chase, who was filling in a crossword puzzle and pointedly ignoring House. House smirked and tapped harder as the Aussie’s jaw tightened in frustration. Provocation was so, so fun.

The squeak of the chair and the tap of the cane weren’t enough to break Chase, so House added a third obnoxious noise into the mix…

Pop.

Tap.

Squeak.

Pop.

House’s lips pressed together and then burst apart again, popping loudly.

The scratch of Chase’s pencil against the newspaper became louder, and he swore colorfully as the pencil poked through the thin paper.

“Damn it House, will you just shut up?”

“Jeez, no need to get your knickers in a twist…that is a British thing, isn’t it?”

“I’m Australian,” Chase ground out through gritted teeth.

House popped again.

“Same difference, really…except the Brits that live in the Land Down Under are all convicts…maybe that’s why I hired you, so Foreman would have a friend. Or maybe it was so Cameron would have a friend. I hired her because she was pretty, you know?”

Chase scoffed and turned back to his crossword.

House spun his cane to the floor and heaved himself out of his chair in a big show. He lopped over to Chase and sat down in the chair adjacent to his, leaning over so he blocked the puzzle from Chase’s view. Chase slammed the pencil down onto the glass tabletop and leaned back in his chair with a hiss.

“You know what your problem is Chase?”

“Enlighten me.”

“You’re provoked much too easily.”

“Is that so?” Chase glared at House, who stood up and hovered inches away from Chase. Chase tried to lean back, but if he forced his chair any farther it would crash to the ground. Chase looked away from House’s piercing blue eyes as he felt a blush rushing up his neck and onto his cheeks.

“Yes.” House replied.

Chase made a small noise in his throat as he accidentally caught House’s eye. He hastily looked over at the coffee maker, trying to ignore House’s lips hovering inches away from his own. When House spoke again, his hot breath intensified Chase’s blush.

“And I definitely hired you to be Cameron’s friend…you’re much too pretty for your own good.”

Chase let his breath out in a whoosh and reached up to crush House’s lips to his own. He could feel House smiling against his mouth and whimpered as the older doctor broke the kiss.

“You see,” House smirked as he lowered his lips back down to meet Chase’s, “…much too easily provoked.”
