Title: Hello, Doctor

Author: interpretthis

Fandom: Doctor Who

Pairing: Ten/Jack

Rating: PG-13ish
Genre: Slash

Summary: There was too much allure behind Jack’s hellos to keep the Doctor from wanting one for himself.  [Set during “Utopia”.]

“Again?  Oh dear lord, can’t you just keep your soul in your pants where it belongs?” The Doctor glanced at Jack and his new best friend quickly before dashing his eyes back to his glowing sonic screwdriver.

Jack gave a cheeky grin, as per usual, as the pretty young man shaking his hand stared and stuttered off something akin to “Really.  Not.  Minding.  Thi – uh – sex – right – I’ll just be – going - then.”  He limped off in the opposite direction, glancing back with a torn expression as if all that had come out totally wrong and he’d really rather be getting closer rather than farther from the Captain.

The Doctor looked back to Jack as the man vanished, cocking an eyebrow, keeping his hands busy with switches and levers all the while.  “Well you got that one good.”

Jack stuffed his hands in his pockets and leaned back on his heels, fixing the Doctor with that piercing gaze of pure, sexual intensity that made the receiver feel as if they were being de-fabricated.  Which, in all honestly, they likely were.

“Did I?” Jack narrowed his eyes, scrutinizing the Doctor’s mask of an expression – the way his eyebrows shot up into his hair, his eyes somehow not seeing what stood directly in front of them, as if they, like the Doctor, were constantly on the run.  “Charm like that doesn’t seem to work on everyone, you know.”

The Doctor lowered his eyes, hastily turning back to the switchboard, mechanically twirling the sonic screwdriver between the fingers of his regenerated hand.  He managed to force out a quick “huh” under his breath, watching the switchboard’s multicolored lights flash on and off as Jack moved quietly to stand beside him, leaning against the edge of the control panel, his eyes still fixed carefully on the Doctor.

The Doctor stared pointedly down at the board, continuing to flip switches on and off even after he’d run out of viable things to do.  Jack’s gaze never wavered.  Finally the Doctor stopped, bracing his hands along the panel’s edge, tension taking hold of him like a taut wire as he inhaled deeply.  He snapped his head to the side, eyebrows furrowed.

                “Look, if you’ll just -”

Jack grabbed his wrist in one fluid motion, prizing it carefully between his fingers, his blazing stare fixed on the man inches away.  The Doctor drew heavy breaths, eyes finally in the moment, desire and anguish battling out a furious tango in their depths.  Jack watched calmly, drawing the Doctor’s new hand to his lips to kiss the knuckles, the press of his warm mouth sending a shiver down the Doctor’s spine.

“You’re wrong,” Jack could see fear and bewilderment forming in the contours of his face as the Doctor spoke, “you’re wrong.  You can’t be this way.”

Jack clutched the hand tightly, pulling the Doctor flush against the length of his torso.

“Don’t think I haven’t seen the way you look at me Doctor.  The way you act when I meet someone new.  Always the jealousy.  Always there.  Behind the eyes.  Every time I say hello.  Well that ends here, Doctor.  Right now.  It’s your turn to meet someone new.”

There was a pause – perhaps mere seconds, perhaps minutes, even hours – the Doctor did not know, these things being relative and all.  Eyes locked on eyes, mind working furiously, hearts twanging relentlessly at the pace of “The Bumblebee”, yes and no and oh but staking it out in the trenches of his mind until –

He snapped, flying at Jack in an instant, lips finding lips, slick and warm and hot and too right to possibly, ever be anything like wrong.  Long, thin fingers grappled into the short spikes of Jack’s hair, holding their lips together, frozen in a moment in time and space, two extraordinary men dancing a dance meant for the ordinary.  The Doctor pressed full into Jack, the control panel digging into the other man’s back as flesh rubbed flesh and cheeks flushed a deep red in the dimly tinted light of the corridor.  The Doctor moaned low in his throat and pulled away softly, his forehead falling to rest on Jack’s shoulder.  Jack sighed and pulled him near, rubbing the small of his back in smooth circles, the other man’s head clutched close.  The Doctor spoke against his shoulder, muffled but audible over the low, comforting hum of the console.

“I tried to keep that from happening.”

Jack’s lips twitched against the Doctor’s ear.

“I know.  I also know that most things you try to keep from happening have a way of happening all the same.  I figured my odds were good.”  He felt the Time Lord smile against his shoulder.

“And what would you say the odds are of it happening again?”

Jack gave a grin, and the Doctor knew that had he been looking, the other man would have flashed him a wink.

                “Well…knowing you -”

There was a streak of movement from Jack's shoulder.  His eyes slipped shut with a groan as he grinned against his Doctor’s lips.  For all the improbability of the man, certain things were sure to stay constant.

Nice, sweet pre-slash; the during slash would be rather lovely too!

Thanks very much - I'm honored! A mem! - and whether this fic or not, I'll definitely be slashing these two until, well, the end of time. ;)

This is beautiful. I love your use of imagery - no wasted words, so much detail.

And God, I think your Jack is even more sexy than the real one. (Well, I'm not sure that's possible, but you know what I mean!)

I love this line in particular: fixing the Doctor with that piercing gaze of pure, sexual intensity that made the receiver feel as if they were being de-fabricated.

And this one: “I know. I also know that most things you try to keep from happening have a way of happening all the same. I figured my odds were good.”

Both feel very Jack.

One little question: in this paragraph - “You’re wrong,” Jack could see fear and bewilderment forming in the contours of the Doctor’s face as the other man spoke, “you’re wrong. You can’t be this way.” - I couldn't work out who was speaking? I thought it was supposed to be Jack, quoting the Doctor? But the words 'the other man' confused me. ??? :-)

Oh wow, that is about the highest compliment anyone could possibly receive. Though I don't think it's possible either (LOVE the icon, by the way --- instructions and everything ;P).

And I was having issues with that line - one of those times when I think it sounds right, but I can't tell how the reader will interpret it. So thanks so much for pointing that out - I'll try to play around with it a bit. (And it was the Doctor, yeah. :])

Thanks for the excellent review - it's very much appreciated! ♥

Yeah, that makes it much clearer now! :-)

One other thing I just noticed: in the dimly tinted light of the ship. Is this not set on the planet, after the radiation room scene? In which case, I don't think they were in the ship, but beneath it, from what I remember, i.e. in the silo. Not sure what the term for that sort of place is.

(And I love this icon. It's by [livejournal.com profile] becky_h - she used this picture of Jack for a Jack/Fifth Doctor icon and I asked if I could have one with just the Jack picture and she added the - instructions, as you called them - as a sort of bonus!)

Oh right, absolutely, thanks. :] I was a bit preoccupied with the men last night, and it didn't help that the ship looked the same as the silo (at least from what I could tell). All fixed.

And I officially love this [livejournal.com profile] becky_h person. :]

Thanks again for the feedback!

And I officially love this becky_h person. :]

You've probably seen her around. She's a member of [livejournal.com profile] galactic_conman too. She's more commonly known in fandom as [livejournal.com profile] becky_writing or [livejournal.com profile] fandom_me.

She's a great writer, too, as well as making really cool icons :-) (This is another of hers.)

This is gorgeous. There's little better than a good Ten/Jack set around Utopia, because the canon slash just leaves you begging for more!

I think my fave line was: perhaps mere seconds, perhaps minutes, even hours – the Doctor did not know, these things being relative and all.

Or maybe: two extraordinary men dancing a dance meant for the ordinary. Actually yes, that one. It's ... stirring. Thank you.

Thanks very much! I'd been looking forward to this episode for a while (Jack and the Master!), and the scene through the door was just so brilliant. The two of them are walking inspirations. :)
